My role

As the UX designer, my role was to make large volumes of clinical information easy to navigate, understand, and act on without overwhelming healthcare providers. I worked across the patient journey, from intake and clinical history to physical examinations, wound assessment, medications, treatment notes, and follow-up, while establishing a consistent structure across highly data-intensive workflows.

Goals

A key focus was translating complex clinical processes into clear, scalable interfaces. This included structuring the EMR, designing detailed assessment workflows, creating data-heavy views and decision-support experiences, and exploring AI-assisted workflows such as SADIQ, which transforms uploaded audio and files into editable clinical summaries and SOAP documentation.

Challenge

How do you organise a large amount of clinical information so that healthcare professionals can quickly find what they need, document care, and make informed decisions? The challenge was to create clear, efficient workflows that organise complexity rather than hide it, while supporting different clinical needs across assessments, documentation, treatment, and decision-making.

Impact

The design helped establish a scalable foundation for managing complex clinical workflows and patient information in real-world healthcare environments.

Understanding the Clinical workflow

I started with market and competitive research, exploring established EMR platforms and their clinical workflows to understand how they structure complex patient information and support doctors throughout a consultation.

I used these insights to identify common patterns, gaps, and opportunities, then developed a clinical workflow tailored specifically to OphyCare’s users and requirements.

The competitive research is not shown here due to proprietary and confidentiality considerations. The focus was to create a workflow that could handle large volumes of clinical information without compromising usability or efficiency.

The CDS patient journey across four phases. Registration: Patient Intake. Subjective and Objective: Patient Overview — chief complaint, allergy list, medical, social and family history — then Clinical Assessment: vital signs, physical exam, lower extremity, neuropathy, fall risk, nutrition risk and wound assessments, and the skin substitute procedure note. Assessment and Plan: Diagnosis, carrying the problem list and treatment notes, then Treatment: procedures, physician orders, multi wound chart, plan of care, treatment goals and prescriptions. Documentation and Outcomes: Documentation, then Follow-up. Running beneath it, the AI-assisted documentation track: audio or file upload, the SADIQ AI engine, a SOAP summary, doctor review and edit, and the finished patient record.

Patient Overview

A structured patient table gives providers a quick overview of key patient information, with search, filters, sorting, and actions available to quickly find and manage records.

Patient Filters & Quick Actions

To reduce unnecessary navigation, I consolidated patient filters and quick actions into the patient list, enabling doctors to find the right record faster and act on it directly—whether reviewing details, updating information, or scheduling an appointment.

Patient Intake via Referral Management

To support different patient entry scenarios, I designed intake around two core paths: manual entry and referral management. The referral flow introduces triage and review before approval, helping staff prioritise incoming patients and move them into care with greater clarity.

CDS: Patient Details & Workflow Navigation

To reduce navigation overhead, I made Patient Details and Workflow easily accessible from the same view, helping doctors quickly reference patient information while progressing through the care workflow.

Appointments

Designed around the different stages of an encounter, the appointments view uses clear states. Contextual quick actions, including starting a visit, adding notes and others, help providers understand the status of each appointment and take the next step without leaving the workflow.

SADIQ AI Assistant

SADIQ uses uploaded audio or files to generate structured clinical summaries, which providers can review, edit, and incorporate into the patient record.

Structuring Clinical Complexity — Wound Analysis

Wound Analysis was the most complex workflow to structure, bringing together clinical observations, measurements, wound characteristics, assessments, and documentation. The challenge was to make this depth of information easy to navigate without overwhelming doctors. Research, competitive benchmarking, and iterative testing with doctors helped shape the information architecture. This led to a layered navigation model: global tabs for the main areas of the workflow, with nested tabs for more detailed clinical information. The result is a structured experience that keeps related information together, makes navigation predictable, and helps providers move between assessments without losing context.

More Beyond What’s Shown

The screens above represent only a selection of the broader CDS work. The product covered dozens of clinical workflows across the patient journey, from intake and history-taking to assessment, documentation, treatment, and clinical decision-making. My work spanned the end-to-end process of understanding each workflow, mapping clinical requirements, researching and benchmarking existing solutions, defining information architecture and interaction patterns, and iterating through feedback and testing with doctors.
